Trail to Mashad |
Climbed out of Nazareth, on, for sure, at least 1000 stone steps, and
headed towards Mashad and Cana. It was going particularly well as we past
Zippori and saw three young hikers ahead of us. We, of course, started
following them assuming they were hiking on our trail. It was a rookie
mistake. In our defense, at this point the Jesus Trail joins the Israel National Trail and the markers change color (which we would have known if we were paying closer attention to our trail guide). We added 6 km to our day when we finally realized that the map
directions could no longer be interpreted in our current location.
We made it back to the Jesus trail after a grueling climb out of a valley and trudged
on to Mashad where we found a corner store and bought juice and
cookies. We were then only 1.5 km from Cana. It took us a while to find our accommodation, the Cana Wedding Guest House. In the end we walked 19.34 K today when we had only expected to do 13.5K. It was long - backpacking - no Sherpa luggage service here.

Trail marker - right turn! |
Short of the two churches, Cana does not
have a lot to offer. No matter how many times we walked main street we
never did find a restaurant where we wanted to eat. We survived chicken
kabobs and french fries, ordered by pointing at a picture but Anita forgo all the lovely salads sitting out in the open warm air. Toasted
pita bread is the best and a great staple when you are not sure of street food. We met a French couple, also staying at the Guest house, who live close to the start of the Camino in southern France. They are finding it a challenge to travel as everyone here speaks Hebrew or Arabic, with some English, but no French.
