Day 14 to Glaisdale (12th day hiking - 34K)
Today we left Beak Hills farm at 8:30 and started off on our longest day, 34 K. We did the required two steep hills of the day, up the stone steps and then down stone steps, the rest of the K on top of the moors. Some hikers found the landscape boring but we thought it had a remote and wild beauty. Anita is really stiff, after all the downs! Most of the day, we walked alone, without any of our coast to coast friends. That meant our constant companions today were grouse. We passed many grouse butts, complete with shooters, and felt good about ALL the grouse on our side of the walk, away from the shooters. We walked for 8K on the trackbed of a Victorian mineral railway with absolutely no chance to take a wrong turn. Amazingly, 15 kms into our hike, The Lion Inn appeared, out of nowhere. Given the miles we needed to make, it was coffee and soup, only. We walked most of the day in rain gear but managed to avoid rain although it was threatening. Out B&B, Laneside, is in a new home. Our host drove us, and the 2 other guests, to the pub for dinner and the pub landlord will drive us back. Most of the C2C hikers we have met were in the bar tonight and the consensus on the day was LONG. Tomorrow is the last 30k +/-. There are some hills but we hope to make it into Robin Hood Bay in time to raise a glass with our trail mates.
